Modern skincare often separates plants into extracts, isolates and standardized active ingredients. This salve takes a different approach.

Birch tar itself belongs to a much older tradition of caring for the skin. For generations it was incorporated into preparations for troubled and damaged skin and was historically applied even to wounds. Here, it is brought together with whole resin and herb, richly nourishing oils and traditional fats in a concentrated, waterless preparation.

The Botanicals

Whole Boswellia sacra resin and yarrow are brought into the formula in their complete botanical form, preserving the natural complexity of resins, volatile compounds and countless other plant constituents rather than reducing the plants to standardized extracts or isolated actives.

Siberian pine nut oil and intensely colored sea buckthorn fruit oil complement them with their remarkable natural composition of fatty acids, carotenoids, tocopherols, phytosterols and other lipid-soluble compounds, while sheep tallow and beeswax create the rich, protective foundation of the salve.

Genuine birch tar sits at the heart of the composition. Traditionally valued for the care of troubled and damaged skin—and historically used in preparations applied even to wounds—it brings far more than its unmistakable smoky character. Its naturally occurring complexity is precisely why it has held a place in traditional skin care for generations.

Elemi essential oil is included with the same intention. Distilled from the resin of Canarium luzonicum, elemi has a long history of topical use and has traditionally been valued in preparations for damaged and weathered skin. Its complex aromatic constituents complement the resinous character of Boswellia and birch tar while contributing their own distinctive botanical properties.

Nothing is included merely to make the salve feel or smell more appealing for a moment. There is no synthetic fragrance to disguise the birch tar, no artificial color, no petroleum-derived base, and no water or fillers to dilute the composition.

The Ritual
