Why Whole Botanicals?

It is by choice.

A whole botanical contains an extraordinarily complex mixture of compounds in their naturally occurring proportions. Humans did not design these proportions. Nature did—and did so long before us. Fatty acids, polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenes, sterols, pigments, waxes, and countless other compounds, depending on the plant, exist alongside one another as part of the botanical whole.

Our skincare begins with a simple principle: “natural origin” isn’t enough. We choose ingredients that remain as close as possible to their whole, recognizable form—botanical oils, herbs, resins, clays, minerals, and traditionally rendered fats. Even essential oils are used sparingly, and those we do use must earn their place by providing a meaningful purpose beyond fragrance alone.

You won’t find surfactants, emulsifiers, foaming agents, added natural or artificial fragrances or colors, synthetic preservatives, or modified cosmetic esters simply to make our skincare behave, smell, foam, look, or last a certain way. We do not presume that we know better than nature.

And so we formulate with the skin—and the body—you will live in 40 or 50 years from now in mind. We choose to omit many functional ingredients routinely used in modern skincare, not because we claim that each of them is harmful, but because we don’t believe an ingredient needs to be proven harmful before we can question whether it needs to be there at all. In the United States, most cosmetic ingredients do not undergo FDA premarket approval, and the history of cosmetics includes ingredients that were restricted or prohibited after years of use. Our choice is therefore simple: meaningful purpose over formulation convenience.

Your skin is your largest organ, and what you put on it is part of how you care for your whole body and long-term wellbeing. No one can promise what decades of daily exposure to every newly created cosmetic ingredient will mean over a lifetime.
